Seeing an unexpectedly high water bill can be scary, and there can be a few different reasons for the cause. But don’t worry! Instant Plumbing and Rooter is here to help! Here are some steps you can take to help determine the source of a high water bill and help find a resolution.
First, think through your water usage habits, have they changed recently? In the hotter months you may find yourself showering or needing to water plants and yards more frequently. This can cause a higher water bill. Are there more people utilizing water in your home than in years past? Did you plant a new yard or skip an annual trip where no water would be used in your home for a period of time? If you are confident that none of these are the culprit, then it is time to start the search for a possible leak in your home.
Begin by going around to each faucet and source of water in your home. Sinks, toilets, a refrigerator with an ice machine, and your washing machine are all places where leaking water can hide. Inspect faucets for drips and leaks, check under cabinets for dampness and signs of moisture like water trails or rusting. If you’ve noticed any of these signs, then it is time to give us a call to set up an appointment to have the leak repaired. If the leak is still being allusive, then you will want to take the investigation outside. Before heading outside, make sure that all sources of water have been turned off within the home.
Check any hose connections (also known as a hose bib) for leaks. Look for excessive wetness in your yard, a dripping mister system, or even a broken sprinkler. If you find that your sprinkler system is the problem, then you will want to reach out to your landscaper or gardener as Instant Plumbing and Rooter does not service sprinkler systems. If you have searched for the leak inside and outside of your home with no luck, then you will want to go over to your water meter to look for signs of a hidden leak. There are 2 types of water meters that your home could have, digital or analog.

If you have an analog meter, the numbers will roll past in a dial system. Remember to take note of the number and after ten to fifteen minutes of no water usage in the home, see if the number has had any change. A change in number points, to the possibility of a leak. If there has been a change in the number, but no water has been utilized within the home, then it is time to call a professional leak locater. A leak locater will be able to locate hidden leaks within your home’s walls or floors. Once the leak has been located, Instant Plumbing and Rooter can come out to make the repair.
It’s important not to ignore unexpectedly high water bills and signs of hidden leaks. Leaks in walls and attics can cause damage to wooden framing and drywall if not addressed. Leaks can also occur in the pipes that run underneath your home’s foundation. These are referred to as a slab leak and can cause damage to your homes foundation and flooring if not repaired.
Leaks can vary in size and location and can often be a source of frustration for home owners. The good news is Instant Plumbing and Rooter is here to help every step of the way! If you are still concerned about a leak and are unsure of what next steps to take, give our office a call to talk through your options today.
